This is such a great round-up! Seeing where we’ve crossed over tells me I should just come to you for recommendations! “Beloved” still haunts me and I loved “The Fire Next Time” especially as a prelude / context to “Between the World and Me”. If you want an engaging (but still light/entertaining/holiday speed) novel, I’m wrapped up in “Life After Life” at the moment.

Hi Nina! Nice post, great to read from your point of view, where you’re familiar with it but still getting a hang of stone carving. Can’t wait to try it myself some day, it seems equal parts challenging and fun!

Your post reminded me of a great novel that came out late 2013 called “A Perfect Capital”, about a Unitedstatsian letter carver who moves to London to inspect Gill’s work and to create her own magnum opus. I think you’d really enjoy it!

I do!

I can’t say I’ve been in any European thunderstorms for comparison, but the mid-Atlantic states of the US have amazing storms in the summer. If you get an opportunity to visit the Outer Banks of North Carolina, you are almost guaranteed a house-shaking thunderstorm that you can watch for miles as it passes over the ocean.

Yes. Als CH-Secondo schäme ich mich auch im gestandenen Alter immer noch, wenn Leute aus einem “grossen” Sprach- oder Kulturkreis sich benehmen wie Feldherren.
Wobei: auch das Mobbing, das ich als Kind von anderen Kindern erfahren musste, weil meine Eltern “anders” sprachen, hat mich verletzt.
Und: wenn ich auf mein bisheriges Leben zurück schaue, dann zählen die Momente, wo ich Menschen aus anderen Kulturen bewusst treffen durfte, zu den schönsten, zu den wertvollsten. Dann, wenn ich die Chance habe, meine Weltsicht relativieren und zu “reframen”.
Nina, du hast recht. Wegen Spiegeleiern oder Fondue – da kann ich auch daheim bleiben.

These are really lovely, I specially liked the fourth and fifth photographs: you can almost feel the summer breeze. The one you subtitlet “Blue Light” is probably my favourite though. Must’ve been quite a ride out there!
